From the mere setup of an online store to promotion in social media channels, the marketing strategy for eCommerce has evolved so much that it will be hard to keep up if you don't keep on learning. Today, we'll look into a collection of tips that eCommerce website owners are using today. In fact, we have around 50 tips for you to work with. Search Engine Optimization 1.  Learn SEO Most eCommerce website owners just hire a professional SEO to do the job. They have their reasons. Most of the time, it is just because they are too lazy to learn SEO. But they don't know that they are committing a grave mistake. You see, eCommerce websites requires continuous optimization. If you will hire someone to do the optimization for you, you'll soon find yourself broke. The solution? Learn SEO. Don't rest the rankings of your website on the hands of some self-proclaimed professional. Go out there, read some eBooks and attend some courses to learn more. 2.  Do Your Keyword Research before You Do Anything One of the first things that you'll learn about SEO is keyword research. It is the first step of SEO for good reason. It is hard to optimize anything if you don't know the keywords to target. So do your keyword research before anything else. There are some keyword research guides that can help you with the process. 3.  Don't Forget Onpage Optimization Once you have your keywords down, you'll like to optimize your site for them. This is where you tweak certain elements in the website to include your main keyword. This can be your title, meta description and others. This act is called onpage optimization. 4.  Do Image Optimization More than onpage optimization, you should optimize your images as well. eCommerce websites usually contain thousands of product images. Often, website owners don't have the time and the patience to optimize each of them. Don't do that. It will hurt your chances of getting ranked. Don't be lazy and do your onpage optimization. 5.  Make Your Online Store Responsive Did you know that 80+% of online users are using mobile phones and tablets? If you don't make your website responsive, the website will not look good on these gadgets making your visitors to look elsewhere. The number of mobile users has steadily grown over time and it continues to grow. Don't get left behind by still using a template that doesn't change based on the screen that's viewing it. 6.  A Little PPC goes a Long Way If you cannot get ranked right away and you need to get some traffic to your site to get the sales started, you may want to get started with PPC. PPC stands for Pay-per-Click. It is a pay-to-advertise feature of Google where they instantly put your website on the top of the page without the need for SEO. It is a nice way to boost your site especially if you need some initial traffic. 7.  Track Your Traffic Once the traffic starts flowing in, it is time to track it. You may use some tools such as Google Analytics or use some paid tools like SimilarWeb and SEMRush. This will show you where the traffic is coming from and gives you an overview of the behavior of your traffic. This will help you in your decision to market from that time forward. Inbound Marketing 8.  Give Away Freebies to Encourage Your Customers to Buy More An easy way to market your website is to do it on the website itself. You can do this by providing seasonal or limited-time freebies for every purchase. I have seen some eCommerce websites giving away some old items stocks if a purchase reaches a certain amount. 9.  Give Percentage Discounts for Signing Up You can also open email signups and give them discounts in their first purchase. This usually gets over the barrier of not buying for new customers. When customers buy, they are usually on the fence about it. By giving them percentage discounts, you get over the barrier and just get them to buy. 10.  Have Some Limited-Time Deals Aside from freebies, you can also implement some limited-time deals. This can be amounts or percentage discounts that expires at a specified date. This usually gets people to buy. 11.  Have an Exit Marketing Strategy Some eCommerce websites have an exit marketing strategy. This is where they offer a deal at the moment that the customer is about to leave the page. This is a great strategy to get them back to the website to continue their purchase. Referral Marketing 12.  Have a Reward-the-Referrer Program Referral marketing is one of the fastest ways to grow your customer base. One of the easiest ways to have a referral program is to reward the referrer. This can come in the form of an amount of money or percentage discount that is only accessible when they refer another person to the website. 13.  Have a Reward-the-Friend Program Sometimes, referral programs must be done the other way around. Instead of rewarding the referrer, it may be wise to reward the friend instead. This is what Uber did when they reward new users that are referred by other people. 14.  Have the Best of Both Worlds You can also choose to just reward both. This way, the referrer will be more motivated to share the referral program and the friend will be more motivated to create an account. It's the best of both worlds. Branding 15.  Have a Consistent Name and Message Branding is more than just a name. It is also not just about the logo. It is about having a consistent message across all platforms. Just think about the popular brands that you know. Think about the message that they are sending. Look at all of their social media platforms and see the message repeated over and over again. That's how you create a brand. 16.  Be Transparent This is the age where people can easily catch you if you are being unreal. In fact, marketing has become so personal that people tend to buy more from brands that they trust. The easiest way to get their trust is to be transparent. Show who you really are even if you have something to lose. Your market will thank you for it. 17.  Tell Your Story If you want to go another mile, you can also tell your story. People love stories and they would be more than happy to listen to yours. You see, people want to see the human beings behind the brands. Sure, they may like your products and services. But if they don't get to related to the people who are behind it, they will not relate with the brand. 18.  Be Unique Most marketers commit the error of trying to be the same as the next man. They have this philosophy of looking at what successful marketers are doing and then copy it. While this can work, the effect doesn't last. In time, there will be hundreds of people doing the same thing. For the customer, it gets boring. So be unique. Aim to stand out than to blend in. 19.  Create Personal Experiences You can also augment your brand's story by sharing the story of your customers. You can ask for more than just reviews. You can interview them to see how much your brand has changed their lives. This is a good idea for content or a promotional video for your brand. Content Marketing 20.  Have a Blog Some eCommerce website owners think that they don't need a blog. They are selling stuff online and they think that blogging is simply a waste of time. But it's not. Blogging is essential not only for content marketing but also for standing out. Don't be like other brands that are just focused on selling. Focus on giving information as well. You can only do that if you have a blog. 21.  Write Long Form Content When you blog, it is easy to rush the process and just stick with shorter post. While this can work, it hardly ranks on the search engines. Nowadays, the search engines has developed a liking to long form content. These are content that has at least 1000-2000 words. The longer, the better. 22.  Support Your Content with Statistics If you have been writing content for quite some time, you'll find that it is easy to hit the wall when you need to write more than 1000 words. With this, you can support the information in your content with some statistics. Fortunately, researching statistics has become really easy. Just search for them on Google and you'll get lots of results. 23.  The More Graphics, the Better Aside from statistics, you can also increase the value of your content by adding some graphics. Graphics can come in the form of tables, graphs, self-generated graphics, screenshots or stock images. What this does is it makes your content look more interesting. Instead of just having a big block of words, you have images to break each block making it easier to read. 24.  Provide Visual Content If you will look at some of the most popular brands, you'll find that they usually have a visual element in them. But they don't stop with just providing images in their content. They also create visual content. This often comes in the form of infographics and they are highly shareable. So if you want to get the attention of your market, creating content like this helps. 25.  Create Videos Aside from infographics, you should also create some videos. These days, users are now more open to videos. They can stream it even in their favorite social media sites. You should tap this trend by creating some videos yourself. 26.  Invite User-Generated Content Finding it hard to create content everyday? You can invite some user-generated content in your website. You can do this by creating a 'Write for Us' page or asking a customer how the experience in your website went. It is a nice way of creating user-generated content in your website. 27.  Provide Content in Other Websites as Well As you continue in your content marketing journey, don't limit yourself to your own website. You should go out there and provide your expertise in other websites as well. How can you do this? Through guest posting of course. There are plenty of guest posting opportunities in any niche if you are only willing to search for them. 28.  Encourage User Reviews In eCommerce websites, user reviews are essential not only in guiding customers to buy but also for increasing user-generated content. This is the reason why user reviews are important in an online store. So if you have that capability in your website, be sure to activate it. Email Marketing 29.  Capture Emails Right from the Start Most eCommerce website owners make the mistake of not capturing emails right from the beginning. You should want to funnel your traffic into a place where you can easily contact them and the best place is your autoresponder. It is a good thing that creating an email capture in your page is easier because of all the email autoresponder providers that we have on the market. 30.  Give Your Customers a Good Reason to Sign Up Once you have signed up to an email autoresponder, it is time to give your customers some incentives to sign up. This can be a simple discount code or an amount of money that they can use to spend on your website. You choose. The key is to give them a good reason to sign up. 31.  Have the Signup Form in Front of Your Customer's Faces Most eCommerce website owners commit the error of hiding their signup forms on the top of the page or just having it quietly sit at the sidebar. While this is good, you should not be afraid to promote aggressively. Marketers have found that pop-ups work best when it comes to email signup forms. 32.  Capture Emails When They Buy From You You should also create a separate list for your buyers. How? Capture their email when they buy from you. You can integrate your autoresponder with your purchase button or you can ask them to sign up to retrieve their products. 33.  Use the Power of Customer Segmentation You can also segment your market based on what they bought. This means that you create a separate list for each buyer. This allows you to send more targeted deals. Your customer will thank you for it. It will make them feel that you understand them before you make an offer. 34.  Capture Emails When They Exit Your Page Just when your customer is hitting exit, you can also make an offer that they can refuse. As you do this, you can just ask for their email. So if they still end up leaving, you can still contact them for future deals. Social Media Marketing 35.  Don't Market EveryWhere Social media can be confusing. It is easy to try to be everywhere. While you may have the temptation to sign up to every social media site that you know, don't do that. Focus is key. If you can sign up to a few but make more updates. That's better. 36.  But Market Consistently Don't market aggressively one day and go AWOL the next.  Be consistent. If you don't have time to update your social media channels, you can always use automated tools. I am currently loving PostCron for social media updates. There are also other tools like Buffer and Edgar. 37.  Advertise if You Need to What is the easiest way to get traffic from social media? The answer is advertising. Just set your target market and budget and you are ready to go. What I love about social media marketing is that it is nothing like PPC. You can set the budget thus preventing you from overspending. The result is usually good if you have targeted your market well. 38.  Promote Content That Social Surfers Like You may notice that some titles tend to get clicked more than others. It seems that there are types of content that social media surfers like and topics that they ignore. It may help to study the titles that gets the most clicks and do that. 39.  Host a Viral Contest One of the easiest way to get more social media traffic is to host a viral contest. This is where you ask people to like a page or comment on a post to have an entry in the competition. The result will always be a lot of buzz and tons of traffic to your website. 40.  Tap the Power of LiveStreaming You may have noticed the live videos on Facebook. You can also use this to strengthen your brand. I love how it takes transparency to the next level and allow your followers to take a peek in your daily life. Influencer Marketing 41.  Be Known for Something That Other People Can't Do Before you can market to an influencer, you need to have something that they cannot find in others who have approached this. You may have to find this yourself. What is in you that other people don't have? What can you do that other people can't? These questions will lead you to the answer. 42.  Aim to Stand Out Once you understand what makes you unique, think of how you can make an impact. There are already so many people claiming that they can do something. But how can you prove that you are really better than the rest? You have to do something that stands out. 43.  Reach Out to the Right People Once you have something worth sharing, it is time to reach out to the right people – the people that cares about what you are fighting for. This can be a cause or just a concept or idea. Reach out to these people that resonates with your values. These are the people who will be more than happy to share your content. 44.  Talk to Influencers – They are Not That Scary If some influencers seem too busy to contact, approach them. An email can't hurt. What's the worst that can happen? They may say 'no' but it is not the end of the world. You can just move on and talk with someone else. 45.  Attend Local Conferences and Events If you can, try to meet influencers in local conferences and events. When influencers are in these places, they are more open to talking with other people. This is your chance to really get to know them as a person. User Experience 46.  Test Your Website Before You Launch It You may have the best marketing plan. But if you don't test your website, it is useless. Your customers will just look for another store if they can't buy from your website. Make it a habit to test every page in your website before promoting it. 47.  Split Test Your Pages if You Need to You should also continue to test user experience by split testing your pages. This will allow you to know the pages that your customers want and the types of actions that they do in each page. It is like analytics but better. 48.  Reduce Cart Abandonment You should also create a way to reduce cart abandonment. This is where customers add some stuff to their carts and then change their minds. You can give them a discount if they will only come back to continue their purchase. 49.  Remove Shipping Cost Some customers have admitted that shipping costs often prevents them from buying. This is because they found that they have to spend on top of the cost of the item. To prevent this, you can just remove shipping cost altogether. 50.  Ask for Feedback It never hurts to ask your customers about their experience. You can ask them about it through a customer survey or you can invite some customers for an interview. This will allow you to improve your online store for the benefit of your customer. If you follow these tips, I guarantee that your eCommerce website traffic and sales will grow. These tips may look short and simple. But once implemented, they can be really powerful. What tip do you plan to implement in your online store today? Tell me all about it below. 0 Response to
